The Top 10 Things I´ve Learned in Paraguay

So far I´ve learned...
  1. that ugly hens have more babies than pretty ones.
  2. to tell the difference between the smells of burning plastic, tires and organic material.
  3. not to assume there is not a spider that just crawled in to your backpack at any given point.
  4. that for half the year, there are 3 hours difference between the time in Paraguay and Central Standard Time, and the other half of the year there´s only an hour difference.
  5. that peanut butter and chocolate are here, but they are but a sad and cruel shadow of what I´ve enjoyed in the States.
  6. the dialect of Spanish I´m learning here has many words I will not be able to use ever again. For example: ¨guapo¨ here means ¨hard working¨, but everywhere else if I were to call someone guapo I would be talking about their physical attractiveness.
  7. Bob Barker´s dream to live in a world with responsible pet ownership could be single handedly thwarted by Paraguay. No one neuters anything here!
  8. that when traveling by bus it is impossible to more for more than 22 seconds without seeing a dog ... dead or alive.
  9. Paraguayans´LOVE Guns´n´Roses.
  10. itis rare to see beverages sold in packs of cans because it is more culturally common to buy a liter and just use one glass and share with everyone present.

Thanks to everyone for all of the e-mails and thoughts you have sent my way. I love you and miss you very much. Take care, Carly

Hi, Carly! I was checking your blog. Grandma Ruth is fixing us tacos so I thought I would check on your blog.

Grandma Ruth will read it and comment later. I just got her connected with 1.5Mbps DSL so now she should be having some fun on the Internet.

Post more stuff. I'm sure your dad is eager to hear more. Post some photos if you can.

Avuncularly,

Ray
